Why take part in a Sense&Sustainability Day Course?
Education for Sustainable development (ESD) is meant to be interwoven through curriculum, campus and community – and there is plenty of basic help out there for schools wanting to edge towards sustainability. But do you ever step back and think 'What kind of future am I really preparing these young people for?' Have you ever experienced moments when you have wondered whether our ESD is doing what is says on the tin?
If you have then you are not alone. Much of our education for sustainable development appears to be just 'education for a slightly less harmful world'. We make claims about 'saving the planet' through reducing waste, doing with less, switching consumption and increasing personal responsibility but whilst this is necessary it is not going to be sufficient to bring about a sustainable future or improve the quality of life for everyone on the planet. In any case a future of 'less' has never inspired action.
To bring real change we need to help young people to see the bigger picture and have a vision for a 'bright green' future. We need an inspiring and positive vision of tomorrow. It’s not about switching off lights, it’s about an economy that produces the right lights using the right energy – and with enough for all. How can we get there?
That’s what these intensive day courses are all about. They provide a new and exciting approach to education for sustainable development specifically related to different subjects and roles within schools. They provide an opportunity to - • make coherent sense of sustainability and its challenges • have time to reflect and test ideas • consider the next steps and keep ahead with ideas • assess the balance between 'me and consumerism' and 'systems and citizenship' • gain new perspectives and penetrating insights for overall planning - 'I am through the DCSF doorway what now?' • work with leading ESD thinkers
Each of the Seminars will be different but will all be based around some of the Sense & Sustainability key ideas of • Why doing less harm is not the same as doing good – challenges for what we do now • Making sense of sustainability through changing world view • The prospects for a low carbon economy and what that means for education • Why lessons from nature might be the key to future prosperity • Designing better schools and better learning for sustainability
